How much do you really know about renters insurance? Chances are you know that it offers valuable coverage to protect your physical belongings in the event of fire, severe weather, theft and other covered circumstances. But what many people aren't aware of is that renters insurance also provides liability coverage.
But what exactly does liability coverage entail? There are two main liability risks that every renter faces; these include the injury of visitors and damage to visitors' property. If a friend trips over some clutter and falls through a glass door, you will be responsible for any resulting medical expenses, lost wages and even legal fees if your friend decides to sue. Similarly, if a storm causes a tree to fall through a window, damaging a laptop that you borrowed from a friend, you will be responsible for repairing or replacing the property. However, your liability coverage can reimburse you for these expenses.
Standard renters insurance policies have four sections that focus on different coverages. They include:
- Coverage C: Covers damage to personal property up to predetermined policy limits.
- Coverage D: Covers temporary living expenses if a covered event renders your rental unit uninhabitable.
- Coverage E: Covers expenses associated with third party liabilities up to predetermined policy limits.
- Coverage F: Covers medical expenses associated with third party injuries.
