While you clean your home regularly, it's a good idea give it a thorough scrub-down at least once each year to catch everything that's put off and neglected. Spring cleaning can be intimidating, but nothing will get done until you start. Use these five tips to make your home shine with cleanliness - for at least a day!
- From the top, down: Clean high cabinets/shelves, work your way down to countertops and finish with the floor. As you clean, dust, dirt and other debris falls down. By finishing with the floors, you prevent having to redo the task later.
- De-clutter: A lot of stuff accumulates over the year. Take some time to donate old clothing that you no longer wear, toss expired foods and medicines, sort that pile of old mail and any other tasks that purges your home of the junk.
- Allergy control: Many people suffer from allergies in the spring. Change your air filters, dust the vents and keep windows closed to make your home as allergen-resistant as possible.
- Kitchen nightmare: The average kitchen sink is swarming with bacteria, from leftover food particles to the germs you wash off of your hands. Give it a really good scrub with a disinfectant, or vinegar and hydrogen peroxide if you prefer natural cleaners. You can clean the disposal and remove odors by grinding up lemon wedges, ice and salt.
- Shower TLC: Treat cloudy shower doors with Rain-X auto glass products or rub a teaspoon of lemon oil onto the glass twice a month. These treatments cause water to bead up and roll right off, which reduces the effects of hard water buildup. If you have a cloth shower curtain, pop it into the washing machine for a thorough cleaning.
