Is an SR22 Different in Different States?

Arlington SR22 InsuranceThe type of high-risk insurance documentation that’s called an SR22 is different in different American states. Most states have a requirement for an SR22, although in some cases it is called by another name, For example, in states like Virginia and Florida it is called an FR44. The requirement for an SR22 exists in states like California, Alaska, Pennsylvania and Oregon. Many other states, like Texas, also require drivers to get this SR22 document as proof that shows financial responsibility after the driver is convicted of a DUI or DWI or has certain other black marks on his or her driving record.

What Is an SR22?

In the U.S., some kinds of insurance, like comprehensive and collision coverage, are optional for drivers. Others are not. Nearly all U.S. states require drivers to hold “liability” insurance in order to provide for some of the costs involved in serious accidents.

In some cases, drivers break laws and are considered high-risk. This may lead to an SR22 designation.

An SR22 is a document that has to be filed with a state Department of Motor Vehicles to show that a high-risk driver is legal. After a driver has been caught driving uninsured, he or she will usually have to get an SR22. Those with DUIs or DWIs may also have to have this kind of document. Insurance companies may help policy holders get SR22 documentation.

State Exclusions

Insurance information sources from multi-state insurers show that states like Delaware, Kentucky, Minnesota, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania do not require SR22 documentation, or have not required it in the past. Experts point out that drivers who have an existing SR-2 and move to another state may still need to fulfill their requirements, even if a comparative state law is not on the books.

SR22 coverages

Different states have different levels of minimum liability insurance, which can affect the specific kinds of insurance that a high-risk driver may need. This can also affect SR22 filing rules and other aspects of carrying this proof of insurance.

Having an SR22 is only one part of dealing with troublesome and sometimes tragic driving convictions, such as a DUI. Drivers should know all of the applicable rules for staying legal within a certain state and accomplishing financial responsibility for whatever happens on the road.
